This late Victorian building was built to serve the nearby dry docks. The facility housed heavy pumping machinery to drain the vast dock basins nearby. Steam-powered engines in a nearby engine hall powered these pumps, which ran continuously during docking. Ships sailed in, the gates were closed, and these pumps worked to pump out millions of gallons of water. The ship settled onto keel blocks, holding the ship secure so workers could inspect and repair the hulls below the waterline. Eventually, the shipping industry and the need for local ship repair declined.
